Adult and Senior


Learn how to use your body more efficiently and effectively by an introspective approach to conditioning through a series of movement exercises.

Pilates classes take place on Tuesday nights, from 6:15 to 7:15 pm, year round.  The cost is $40 for 8 weeks (Centre members) or $50 for 8 weeks (non-members).  Contact the Centre for starting dates or to register.



This calming and relaxing form of exercise is believed to relieve many chronic ailments, improve flexibility and joint mobility, and strengthen muscles.

Brush Painting

This centuries-old tradition uses simple combinations of brush strokes to create Oriental style life-like images on rice paper.

Brush Painting sessions are held Tuesday mornings from 9 to 11:30 am.  The cost is $55 for 8 weeks (Centre members) or $65 for 8 weeks (non-members).  You must provide your own materials.  Contact the Centre for starting dates or to register.


Advanced Chinese Calligraphy

This is a volunteer-run activity for adults and seniors, to develop Chinese calligraphy skills and brush painting techniques.

Advanced Chinese Calligraphy takes place on Wednesday afternoons from noon to1:30 pm, year round.  There is no fee for participants.  You must provide your own materials.


Ping Pong

Adults and seniors can drop in at the Centre to play recreational table tennis with other community members.  No registration required!

Ping pong takes place every Monday and Thursday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 pm, year round.  Free to Cecil members; new participants are asked to become Centre members.


Seniors’ Summer Fitness

Enjoy classes designed to improve flexibility, joint mobility, cardiovascular endurance, and muscular strength in a relaxed and social atmosphere.

Summer Fitness classes are offered on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 pm, from May to August.  Call the Centre for cost, start dates, or to register.


Seniors’ Dance

This is a volunteer-run program for adults and seniors, 55 years and up, providing a variety of dances in a friendly, social environment.   Mandarin is the main language of program participants.

The Seniors’ Dance program runs on Thursday nights from 7 to 9:30 pm, year round. There is no fee for participants, but Centre membership is encouraged.


Community Drop-In

On Monday nights, the auditorium is open to the community, with activities for all ages.  Participate in ping pong, billiards, or board games, play the piano, or just come to socialize and meet other members of the community.

The Community Drop-In happens on Monday nights from 6 to 9:50 pm, year round.  Free to all participants!


Community Library

The Centre’s reading room offers daily newspapers in Chinese and English, as well as some Chinese magazines, fiction and non-fiction books, and children’s books.  Members of the public can read newspapers at any time the Centre is open.  For members wanting to borrow books or magazines, a librarian is present:

Monday, Wednesday and Friday 4 to 6:50 pm
Thursday noon to 2:30 pm
Saturday 3 to 4:50 pm
Sunday 2 to 4:50 pm

There are no fees to access the library, but only Cecil members can borrow materials.


Tai-Chi and Tai Chi Swordplay

Tai-Chi is a traditional Chinese form of martial arts, generally practiced to gain muscle control, promote health and longevity, and as a form of relaxation or meditation.

Tai-Chi is offered on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 to 9:50am, year round, and on Sundays from 10 to 11:20 am, year round.

Tai-Chi Swordplay is offered on Fridays from 9:30 to 10:45 am, year round.

There are no fees for Tai-Chi or Tai Chi Swordplay, but participants are asked to become Centre members.


English as a Second Language (ESL) Tutoring

This popular program links recent immigrants seeking to improve their English language skills with trained volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one assistance with conversation, reading, writing, and pronunciation.  The English Conversation Circle meets as a small group, with a volunteer tutor, to practice conversation skills.  ESL tutoring takes place on a daily basis, with dates and times arranged to suit individual needs and schedules.  Contact the Centre to apply.


Income Tax Clinics

Every tax season trained accountant volunteers provide free assistance with filing personal income tax returns, for individuals and families living on low incomes.  Services by appointment only – please contact the Centre in February or March to find out tax clinic dates, times and criteria, or to book an appointment.
